A meta, very artsy film on the verge of drowning in its artsiness. Birdman is a satirical film about Hollywood that turns the camera on itself. It challenges us to identify the difference between making art, and the ‘industry’ of filmmaking. I feel it criticises some artists for obsessing over their relevance and the faux importance of their artistic work, when they should remember that they’re entertainers. They can bare their soul, grapple with human emotion and leave us breathless in their work, but still their job is to entertain. On a technical aspect, it’s a very ambitious undertaking by the director. With only 16 visible cuts, the cast and crew must have been vigorously trained and meticulously rehearsed. Casting was perfect, with its main characters mirroring their actors, and very solid performances from the supporting actors too.

Some might say I simply didn’t understand it but... I found it slow paced, tiring and above all: pretentious
