joaquin is acting amazingly but i still don’t know what i think about the movie itself? we have some iconic scenes but the dramaturgy seems a bit off. hm.. i probably just need to melt the experience a little ;)

Fantastic production value and writing, and I thought Phoenix was an incredible actor before this but now I feel like he was literally born to play Joker. The story flows perfectly and I was so happy to see them bring back that same gritty vibe as the Dark Knight series, which I love so much. It’s definitely not about superheroes or villains though, this is an accurate portrayal of mental health issues and how the government often fails the ones who needs help the most. I really really hope this is going to be a trilogy too.

The character construction on this movie is incredible. It’s hard to believe that a movie made me feel sorry for Joker, because he’s usually portrayed as a full blown psychopath, but it did. Since it’s set in a different universe from the DCEU it’s way more gritty and real than other superhero movies. It’s political message is beautifully presented and feels so actual when compared to the world we live on today. We meet Arthur as a wrecked man trying to fit in a desfunctional society, taking pills to feel better, being abused by everyone around him. The moment the system that was supposedly created to help people like him fit in with society fails him is when he finally gets to be free. Phoenix’s Joker isn’t a psychopath, he’s just a mentally ill man who’s been abused by society, left behind, ignored, silenced, and finally felt the power to raise his voice against the ones who made him feel inferior.

Great movie, not the usual cliche super hero movies produced by the thousand nowadays. If you want to eat popcorn, watch explosions and hear easy jokes stick to avengers.

Movie has almost 50/50 reviews. Well I think they are wrong. Yes, Phoenix carries the movies almost on its own with its own right since he is the one to focus. But the movie is acused of having shaky material, confusing plot... I like to think we are following the initial confusing mind of Arthur Afleck (Phoenix) when he is under the influence of his medication and we watch the transition to not taking the medication, thus going to see what he really thinks, the bad thoughts that in his mind are natural, not visions anymore, no more imagination, just him taking part and action on life. Care, might strike some viewers, the few moments of violence are very raw and may be disturbing to some. It's probably one of those movies you won't watch a second time.
